Data loss is not restricted to computers alone. Those who use portable storage devices know how frustrating it is to have a CD or a diskette that stops working. The data that was saved for use in emergencies is lost. To make the loss less painful, computer experts have been working on applications that can recover data stored on CDs.

These programs may not be able to retrieve all the data, but they can, at least, retrieve part of it. Much depends on the reasons for data loss. These reasons range from configuration errors, lost drive letters, lost partitions and virus attacks. Data loss may also occur due to drive limitations that improperly read files stored on the CD as well as physical damage caused to CD on account of an accident or careless handling.

One of the programs that has been developed to retrieve lost data from CDs is “Bad Copy Pro”. This is a fully automated program and runs on its own. It recovers the lost files and rewrites them back to the hard drive. Among other data, you can recover your lost pictures, documents and even lost applications.

A strong point of “Bad Copy Pro” is that it does not overwrite the files on the CD. This saves you the anxiety of losing files on account of being rewritten. It has a high success rate and does not cost much.

Another program that is preferred by many experts is “Multi Data Rescue”. It can be used to recover data from both CDs and DVDs, is user friendly and can be used in the Windows interface. It can be used for digital media recovery and is capable of recovering data from memory cards. “Multi Data Rescue” can also handle USB related disk problems. It has a version that is specially designed to recover data from DVDs, though the original version is also capable of doing this.

Apart from these two programs there are several other data recovery programs available in the market. Most of these programs identify the reasons that may have caused data loss and suggest methods that should be used to retrieve data.

However, it is always advisable to seek the help of a data recovery expert. They are more knowledgeable on the subject, and familiar with the latest versions of data recovery programs. They also have well equipped labs where they can run the corrupted CDs.
