(NC)-Laptops are becoming as common as gum under the seat in colleges and universities across the country. Whether going from grade 11 to 12 or first year to second year university, the best way to help guarantee you’ll buy the right PC to meet your needs is by doing your research first.

“I realized I’m one of those people who always has about 30 things running on my computer,” said Stephanie Boydell, a law student at the University of Ottawa, “Plus, there are so many options, prices and features it can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you need.

“It wasn’t until I figured out what I’d be using my PC for and did some research that I realized not all notebooks offer a long battery life or built-in wireless.”

For Boydell, her hectic schedule and long days on campus meant battery life, portability and reliable wireless connectivity were at the top of her list. But not all students are created equal.

What kind of user are you?

Notebook users generally fall into one of five categories. But no matter where you fall on the spectrum though, make sure your notebook carries the Intel Centrino Duo processor technology sticker to ensure longer battery life, higher performance and stellar wireless internet connectivity.

. The Media Enthusiast: You want a movable “entertainment centre” with screaming graphics, outstanding performance and the ability to edit, burn and store your entertainment. What’s sacrificed in portability and battery-life is gained tenfold in entertainment value.

. The Gamer: It’s all about speed, fast graphics and nothing else. You want the best mobile processor bar none and the highest-end graphics you can get. So what if it weighs 20 pounds (nine kilograms) – the screen is larger than your TV!

. The Roadwarrior: Its size and weight that matters most. A light and sleek design with long battery life, great performance and the best built in connectivity – from Internet to extra USB ports – makes sure you hit the ground running no matter your location.

. The Multipurpose: You may download music and watch videos, but what you’re really looking for is the ability to write emails, bank online, edit photos on occasion and of course stay on top of your homework without slowing down.

. The Beginner: Your budget is tight and your needs are minimal. You email and surf the internet, use word processing and are looking for a functional laptop at a great price.

With this in mind, conduct online research, ask your friends or visit a retailer to determine which notebook meets your specific needs – and the size of your wallet.
