Cell phones are a great way to stay connected, up to speed and safe. Yet many Canadian consumers have only a limited idea of what to look for when buying a cell phone, or even what questions to ask. Pre-paid cards? Contract or no contract? Free nights and weekends, or unlimited calling?

Industry Canada has come out with new information to help consumers work through the maze of different options, plans and models that can sometimes come with buying a new cell phone. The department has produced “Cellphone choices for Canadians - a Checklist”, a kind of online brochure, with six steps to help consumers “get a grip” on their cell phone options.

What it all boils down to is helping you discover who you are as a cell phone user. It’s important to know your needs and wants before you sign anything, so you don’t end up paying for things you don’t need.

The guide is very practical and has your financial well being at heart. For example, before you even begin to work through the checklist, figure out how much money you’re willing to spend each month. Once you settle on a budget, you can work through the checklist and start making decisions. It even has a step for understanding cell phone bills, line by line.

Cell phones have become an important and vital part of our society, but we need to get a grip on what’s involved. It only takes a bit of time, but it’s worth it. You can download the Industry Canada cell phone checklist at www.ConsumerInformation.ca.
